Opening Day: '82 Texas vs. '97 LSU

The final Opening Day matchup was a classic confrontation of the long-ball power of the '97 LSU Tigers against the dominating pitching of the '82 Texas Longhorns.  And, at least in this particular matchup, pitching once again tops hitting as Calvin Schiraldi held the Tigers to three hits and the Longhorns earned a 3-1 victory.  Schiraldi struck out 10 in eight innings; even so, the Tigers rallied to tie the game at 1 in the 6th when Blair Barbier doubled and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.  However, a 7th inning double into the gap by Texas' Billy Bates drove in Steve Lebay, and that was enough for the Longhorns as Kirk Killingsworth came in to pitch the 9th and shut down the Tigers.
