In this opener for both teams, Texas A&M struck early with a solo homer by Chuck Knoblauch and never looked back as the Aggies cruised to an 8-2 victory over the 2001 'Canes. The Ags added to the lead when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the 4th and Andy Duke (who had a brief minor league career with the Reds after being drafted in the 38th round at the end of the '89 season) drove in two with a sharp single to left. TAMU starter Pat Sweet went the distance, allowing 5 hits and striking out 8 while walking only one. The vaunted speed of the Miami offense was not a factor as they fell behind early, only breaking the shutout in the 8th inning.
