REGIONAL #4: The opening game of this bracket saw the ELO favorite 1941 Yankees taking on a good 91-win 1979 Red Sox team, and once again the favored Old Timer team crashed and burned as the Red Sox put up 6 runs in the 1st inning against Spud Chandler and cruised to an 11-3 victory. The 1981 Royals, in the season after their AL pennant, raced to a 9-0 lead over the 1980 A’s and Rick Langford, although Oakland made it somewhat interesting when they scored 5 runs in the 8th to make the final score a more respectable 9-5. After watching their vaunted ‘41 brethren go down, the 1975 Yankees struck back and beat the 1978 Twins 5-3, making certain that the Twins wouldn’t repeat the regional win of the ‘77 squad. Finally, the 1974 Expos, down 4-2 to Mike Flanagan and the 1977 Orioles entering the bottom of the 9th, roared back to win on a Ron Fairly walk-off homer.
In the semifinals, a 1979 Red Sox team that had put up 11 runs on the pennant-winning Yankees suddenly found themselves helpless against the 1981 Royals’ Larry Gura, who held them to four hits and no runs in a 9-0 blowout. The Royals knocked 16 hits against Steve Renko and a pile of Boston relievers, with Cesar Geronimo contributing a three-run homer to pace KC. The other semi saw the 1974 Expos batter 1975 Yankee starter Pat Dobson for 5 runs before Dobson is pulled after pitching one inning, with Barry Foote poking a three-run blast. Sparky Lyle and other Yankee relievers then put out the fire, but Montreal starter Dennis Blair holds the Yanks to 6 hits in the 5-1 win.
By the ELO ranks, the regional final came down to a #5 seed against a #6 seed, but it was the strong starting pitching of the 1981 Royals that shone through and shackled the 1974 Expos in a 5-1 win. This time is was Dennis Leonard on the mound, and the Expos could not sustain a rally against him as he racked up a complete game win, with Clint Hurdle starring with a solo homer and an RBI double. The Royals thus outscore the opposition 23-6 in claiming the first regional win for an expansion franchise.
